Blimes - New Faculty

Rand Blimes Faculty Addition - August 2009

by Noelani Thompson

Dr. Rand Blimes Ph.D. has joined our Political Science Department. Originally from Ohio, near the city of Columbus, Dr. Blimes served a full-time mission in Hokkaido, Japan where he grew to love Japanese food and learned to speak Japanese. He received his B.A. in Ancient History at the University of Michigan and there also learned to speak and read Latin and Classical Greek. He then enrolled at The University of Colorado where he received both masters and doctorate degrees in Political Science. Before rising to join us here at Brigham Young University—Hawaii he taught as a visiting professor at Brigham Young University—Provo.

"I really like the diversity here. And because of my mission in Japan, I enjoy meeting people from Japan and also eating some Japanese food!"

The arrival of the Blimes family also introduced Rand's wonderful wife Michelle and their three out-going daughters, Sierra, Kali, and Arwen to our Laie community. All love the beach and, like their father, love anything and everything about outdoors. Since arriving Dr. Blimes has even learned how to surf, an accomplishment he has always wanted to achieve. He encourages his students to work hard and also encourages them adding, "I might seem scary but I am actually a really nice guy."

We are grateful that Dr. Blimes and his family have joined us here at BYU-H and extend to them our heartiest welcome and Aloha!
